Background knowledge

The Missouri flag consists of three horizontal stripes in the colors red, white and blue. These represent courage, vigilance, purity and justice. In the center of the flag is the state seal. On it there is an eagle with arrows in its fangs as a sign of war and olive branches in the other as a sign of peace. There is also a grizzly bear, which represents the strength and courage of the citizens. A crescent moon,
symbolizes Missouri at the time of admission to the United States. Surrounding it is a gold band bearing the state motto, 'United we stand, divided we fall.' The seal is held by two grizzlies. The 24 stars represent Missouri the 24th state.

The Missouri flag was adopted in 1913 and the name comes from a Sioux tribe of Indians. The word 'Missouri' means murky water.
