Background knowledge
The flag of Iowa consists of three vertical stripes in the colors blue, white and red. In the center on the white somewhat thicker stripe is an eagle stretching its wings and holding a banner in its beak. On the banner is the state motto, which is: 'Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain'. Translated it means 'We prize our liberties and our rights we will maintain'. Below the eagle, in large red letters, is the word Iowa.
In 1921, the state flag was adopted by Iowa. Iowa got its from the Iowa River, which got its name from the Iowa Indians who lived in the territory. It comes from the word 'Ayuxwa'.
