Background knowledge

The flag of Rhode Island has a white background and is almost square. In the center it shows a golden anchor, which stands for hope. Below it, in a blue banner, is the state motto 'Hope'. Around the anchor are 13 stars representing the 13 founding colonies.
The flag was officially introduced in 1877 but was modified in 1897. Originally it still has a golden fringe around the edges. Rhode Island takes its name from explorer Adrian Block, who named it after the Greek island of Rhodes. He called it 'Roodt Eylandt', which translated means 'red island'.
