Background knowledge
The flag of Oklahoma has a blue background, which reminds of the uniform of Indian Choctaw soldiers. In the center is a buffalo shield of the Indians. A peace pipe and a palm branch are depicted on the shield. Seven eagle feathers hang down from the buffalo hide shield. Immediately below the shield, in white capital letters, is the name Oklahoma.
The flag was adopted in 1925. The name Oklahoma comes from the American missionary Allen Wright, who combined the two words 'ukla' (person) and 'hum' (hum). In context, it then means 'red person'. Oklahoma has the largest Native American population compared to any other state in the United States.
