The flag of Hawaii consists of eight horizontal stripes alternating in the colors white, red and blue. These eight stripes represent the main islands of the archipelago. The stripes are reminiscent of the flag of the USA. The upper left corner shows the Union Jack. This reminds of the good relationship with Great Britain and the British colonization.
Hawaii joined the United States as the 50th state. Hawaii has one of the oldest and unchanged flags in the world. It was adopted in 1816.
One of the theories from which Hawaii got its name is that it was named after its discoverer Hawaii Loa. Another theory is that it was formed from the words 'Hawa' and 'ii' which together mean small or new homeland.
