The Delaware flag is light blue with an ochre diamond in the center. These colors are supposed to remind of the uniforms of the soldiers in the War of Independence. In the rhombus is the seal of Delaware, on which a shield can be seen. The shield shows horizontally running stripes in the colors blue, green and white, on which an ox is depicted. In the upper part of the shield there is a corncob and a wheat gift, they represent agriculture. In the top of the rhombus there is a sailboat that stands for trade. To the left of the shield is a farmer and to the right a soldier. Directly below them is a white banner with the state motto, which reads 'Liberty and Independence'. In German it means freedom and independence. Below the diamond, in white capital letters, is 'December 7, 1787', representing the day Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
On July 24, 1913, the Delaware flag was officially adopted. Delaware takes its name from Sir Thomas West, the first governor of Virginia. Delaware is also used for the river, the land and the Indians.
