Background knowledge
The Pennsylvania flag has a dark blue background with the state seal in the center. On the seal are depicted a ship and a plow and in the lower part three wheat bundles. These symbols represent trade, labor and agriculture. To the left and right are two horses and above the seal is an eagle, representing sovereignty. In a red banner just below the horses is 'Virtue, Liberty and Independence'.
The flag was officially adopted on June 13, 1907. Pennsylvania got its name in honor of Admiral Sir William Penn. The Latin name Sylvania (woodlands) was also added.
