Background knowledge
The flag of Styria shows two horizontal stripes, white and green. In the center is a coat of arms, which is green backed and shows a silver panther. Above the coat of arms is a royal red and white crown with a cross.
The colors green and white are derived from the coat of arms. The green shield with a silver panther dates back to the 13th century. On it there is a crown and a prince's hat. From the 19th century until 1960 the flag was used with reversed color sequence.
